The route at a glance
From central Kuala Lumpur you head north-east on the Karak Highway, leave at the Genting exit and start climbing. The road up the hill is a long series of bends that ends at the hotels and entertainment area at the top. The whole trip is about 50–60 km and normally takes about 1–1.5 hours.
It helps to think of Genting in two levels. Mid-hill is the Awana area, with the Awana SkyWay cable car station and the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets. The top is where the hotels, indoor entertainment and theme park are. Which level you want and how you would like to go up will shape which transport makes sense.

How a private car day works
The classic plan is Batu Caves plus Genting in one day: visit Batu Caves on the northern edge of the city in the morning, while it is quieter and cooler, then join the Karak Highway up to Genting.
- Leave your hotel: set off early to miss the worst of the morning rush in the city.
- Batu Caves: the rainbow staircase and Hindu temples; about an hour is usually enough.
- Mid-hill at Awana: browse the Premium Outlets, or ride the cable car up while the driver goes ahead — agree a meeting point at the top beforehand.
- Chin Swee Caves Temple: a Chinese temple on the way up the hill, a good place to pause for the views.
- The top: free time, then head back down to the city around late afternoon.
A half-day charter (about 4 hours) is tight for a return trip to Genting, so a day trip is normally booked as a full-day charter (about 8–10 hours), with extra hours available if you run over. Details are on our Kuala Lumpur private car charter page.
Choosing a vehicle
For two or three people an economy sedan is enough. For four or five, or when travelling with older relatives or kids, a standard MPV (Toyota Innova, Nissan Serena) or the Toyota Alphard gives more room and a steadier ride on the bends. Six or seven people fit a Hyundai Staria, and 8–12 people a Toyota Hiace van.

Timing, road conditions and weather
- Avoid the peaks: weekends, public holidays and school holidays bring heavy traffic on the hill road and full car parks at the top. Friday evenings are busy leaving the city too. Choose a weekday if you can.
- Motion sickness: the climb is one bend after another. If you are prone to it, come prepared, do not eat a big meal beforehand and sit up front looking ahead.
- Temperature: the top is much cooler than the city and colder still in rain and mist. Bring a long-sleeved layer.
- Weather: afternoon rain and mist are common and can cut visibility, so go up in the morning if you want views and photos.
