Understand the two levels first
Genting Highlands is easiest to think of as two levels:
- The summit: home to Resorts World Genting — hotels, malls, indoor and outdoor theme parks, the casino and most restaurants, many of them connected indoors.
- Mid-hill: the Awana area, with the Awana SkyWay cable car station and the outlet mall. Chin Swee Caves Temple is also on the mid-hill slopes.

Main sights by theme
Theme parks and families
- Genting SkyWorlds: the outdoor theme park at the summit, with several themed zones and rides for different ages. For many families it is the main reason to come.
- Skytropolis: an indoor funfair that works in rain and fog and suits younger children.
- The summit malls hold plenty of other indoor attractions. Check the official channels for opening status, height limits and whether advance booking is needed.
Nature and cool weather
- Awana SkyWay: the cable car from mid-hill to the summit glides over rainforest and, on a clear day, gives wide views. It is an experience in itself.
- The cool air: for many visitors coming up from the tropical lowlands, this is the biggest draw. Mist rolls in morning and evening, which makes for atmospheric photos.
Temple and culture
- Chin Swee Caves Temple: a Chinese temple built into the hillside, with a pagoda and large statues overlooking the valley. The cable car has a stop for the temple, or you can drive there.
Shopping and food
- SkyAvenue: the summit mall, with restaurants, shops and entertainment under one roof — handy when it rains.
- Genting Highlands Premium Outlets: at mid-hill, an easy stop on the way up or down.
- Eating: mostly restaurants in the malls and hotels, from fast food to Chinese and Malay. Plenty of choice, though generally a little pricier than in the city.
The casino
- The summit has Malaysia's only licensed casino, with an age limit and a dress code; check the rules posted on site. If it is not your thing, it does not affect anything else you do here.

Getting around
- At the summit: the main venues are mostly linked indoors, so you can walk everywhere.
- Between summit and mid-hill: the Awana SkyWay is the most convenient, or you can drive up the mountain road. The cable car may pause in bad weather, and holiday queues can be long.
- From Kuala Lumpur: buses run from KL to Genting and are good value — check the operator for schedules and boarding points. E-hailing also works, though you may wait for a ride down at busy times.
- Private car: with family, luggage, older relatives or small children, or if you want to stop at the temple and the outlets, a car is more relaxed. TipThe mountain road has plenty of bends. If you get carsick, eat lightly before the drive and bring motion-sickness tablets.

Good to know
- Bring a jacket: the summit is much cooler than KL, especially at night and in the rain, and indoor air-conditioning is strong too.
- Avoid the peaks: weekends, public holidays and school holidays bring heavy traffic and long cable car queues. Choose a weekday if you can.
- Changeable weather: mist and rain are common, and outdoor rides and the cable car may stop during thunderstorms. Keep your plan flexible, with indoor attractions as a back-up.
- Check official status: rides, the cable car and mall attractions have maintenance periods and changes, so confirm through Genting's official channels before you go.

FAQ
Is a day trip to Genting Highlands enough?
Yes. It is about an hour's drive from KL, leaving time for a theme park or the malls plus stops at the temple and outlets. Stay a night if you want to make the most of the parks.
How cold is it at the top of Genting?
Roughly 15–25°C — much cooler than Kuala Lumpur, and chillier at night and in the rain. A light jacket is a good idea.
Do I have to take the cable car?
No. The cable car is the easiest way from mid-hill to the summit, but you can also drive all the way up. The cable car may pause in bad weather.
Is Genting suitable for elderly travellers and young children?
Yes. Most summit venues are connected indoors so there is little walking, and there is an indoor funfair. The road up is winding, so prepare if anyone gets carsick.
Can I go straight from KLIA to Genting?
Yes. It is about 1.5–2 hours by car depending on traffic, with no need to go through central Kuala Lumpur.
