Kuala Lumpur, Malacca and Genting in five days: one loop, three places

The plan at a glance

The route is a loop: airport → Kuala Lumpur → Malacca → Genting → airport. Malacca lies south of Kuala Lumpur, Genting to the north and the airport to the south. Going south first, then north, and finishing with a drive from Genting straight to the airport saves a lot of backtracking compared with doing everything as day trips from KL.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive in Kuala Lumpur

• Morning / midday: land, clear immigration and head into town, about an hour by road. First time through? Read the KLIA arrival guide.
• Afternoon: check in and rest. Late afternoon, visit KLCC for the Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC Park and the mall.
• Evening: photos once the towers light up, then dinner around Jalan Alor in Bukit Bintang.

Day 2: Batu Caves and the old town

• Morning: go early to Batu Caves, about 30–45 minutes from the city. The rainbow staircase has over two hundred steps; you can enjoy the site from the bottom if you prefer.
• Afternoon: Merdeka Square and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, then walk to Central Market and Petaling Street.
• Evening: dinner in Chinatown or Bukit Bintang and an early night before Malacca.

Day 3: south to Malacca

• Morning: check out and drive to Malacca, about 2–2.5 hours depending on traffic (longer at weekends and on public holidays).
• Afternoon: explore the historic core on foot — the red Stadthuys and Christ Church around Dutch Square, St Paul's Hill with its ruined church, and the old gate of A Famosa at the foot of the hill. Have lunch and a bowl of cendol during the hottest hour.
• Evening: Jonker Street and a stroll along the Malacca River once the lights come on. The Jonker Street night market is usually held at weekends — check locally.

Day 4: Malacca morning, Genting afternoon

• Morning: while it is still cool, visit Cheng Hoon Teng temple and the Peranakan shophouses and small shops of the old streets. Lunch on Nyonya dishes or chicken rice balls.
• Afternoon: drive north to Genting Highlands, about 2.5–3 hours depending on traffic. The last stretch climbs through many bends, so anyone prone to car sickness should come prepared.
• Evening: the indoor malls and restaurants at the top are close together, and the evening air is cool — a relaxed evening of browsing and dinner.

Day 5: Genting, then straight to the airport

• Morning: ride the Awana SkyWay cable car down and stop at the Chin Swee Temple station. The temple is built into the hillside and has wide views on a clear day.
• Midday: shopping and lunch at Genting Highlands Premium Outlets on the lower slopes.
• Afternoon: Genting to KLIA takes about 1.5 hours. For international flights, aim to reach the airport about three hours before departure and leave some buffer for the road.

Getting around without the hassle

First, what public transport does well: the two KL days work easily with trains and Grab; there are plenty of coaches from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) to Malacca; and buses run from KL to the Genting cable car station. For two or three people travelling light, coaches between cities are perfectly workable.

Two legs of this loop are less convenient by public transport: Malacca straight to Genting usually means going back through Kuala Lumpur to change, and Genting straight to the airport involves transfers with all your luggage. Those two legs, plus moving bags between hotels, are where a private car saves the most effort.

Making it shorter or longer

• Four days: squeeze KL into one day (KLCC on the afternoon of day 1, Batu Caves on the morning of day 2, then on to Malacca). The rest stays the same.
• Six days: add a second night in Malacca for a slower pace, or return to KL on day 5 for another night and a half day in Putrajaya.
• No hotel changes: stay in KL throughout and do Malacca and Genting as day trips. No packing, but longer return drives each day and you miss Malacca by night.
• Prefer the beach: swap Genting for Port Dickson, about 1.5 hours from Malacca and good for kids who love the water.
